It's about time people turned their back on religion, in fact, it's long overdue.
If people want to believe in God, that's fine. But why believe in the religious scriptures and books? After all, these books were written by men, not by any god.Why all relegions ,traditions and customs mostly tend towards controlling behaviour and freedom of women?
Heck read the ';Da Vinci code';. It has some interesting writings on women, religion and how they in some cases got screwed.

Why all relegions ,traditions and customs mostly tend towards controlling behaviour and freedom of women?
Because men, not women make the rules of religion.
no, Vedanta of Hinduism never do this.
Christianity treats women with respect.
The Bible says that as Christians
we are no longer jew nor greek
male nor female
bond nor free
We are all one in Christ...
Fear of women's brains and worrying what other men think.
religons are a reflection of a society trying to keep order for its own survival. sort of like the alpha lion can control 5 lionesses he want s to mate with. its all based on survival. humans can not survive as solitary creatures. in the society, men and women coexist. i think men were controllling women though brute force before the religons that reenforced the behavior sprung up.
Because when the rules were written down only men could write.
Because men are sexually frustrated and jealous.
You should not forget that there are still societies in this world where women lead.
Edit @Duirmud; In most buddhist societies, women are second class citizens as well. It might be easier for them to climb to a higher position than in e.g, Muslim societies.
I think because a lot of religions are man made.
they have been used to control the poor and illiterate and they still are.
I am not aware that Christianity binds a woman in any way.
Women are looked upon as equal in the fold of Christ.
God Bless You!
Because they were all founded by men.
People have twisted the pure meanings of Gods teachings, so that men and stupid women that follow stupid men can maintain power over women. Males and Females must be treated equally.
Interesting question. Why indeed?
i may be wrong but I dont think Buddhism tries to do this. Does anybody know?
Are there any religions that are different?
thats just human nature. we are here with a strong driving urge to procreate. we are also selfish and only want our genes to pass on. so the more women we have and control, the better. biologically speaking of course
Just an educated guess, but maybe because the human sex drive is so strong and so universal, and the family unit is so basic to a stable society, heavy-handed rules are thought necessary to control them by making them understandable to all.
There is a theory that it all stemmed originally from the need to control paternity.
Women have ALWAYS known if the children they have are actually theirs. Men haven't always been so sure.
I think one could just as easily argue that in the opposite direction. Religion, as it is construed today, actually benefits married women with children and elderly women by encouraging men to settle down, get married, and become family men.
Most of the athiests I know personally are actually guys. Most of them are single guys who consider religion to be a sort of mind control and behavior modification control scam to keep guys pacified and an ';in line'; so that they will settle down and protect and support women.
I don't buy into any of that thinking mind you - just letting you know that there is another angle you could look at it from.
My own opinion is that religion overall, while yes being responsible for some atrocities in the past, has overall been a positive and civilizing influence on mankind, and on the whole we are better off with it than without it.
The don't all. And history has many examples of matriarchal and matrilineal religions and cultures.
Mostly the Middle-Eastern derived ones (patriarchal monotheism) has coloured the scene somewhat c0ck-shaped.
Religions that fear women usually paint a woman as 'unclean' in their culture. Hence the mythical 'Eve' is portrayed as the one who ate the fruit and tempted Adam, hence women have their genitals mutilated by male-orientated religious cultures.
Read the 'Malleus Maleficarum'; (Christian book 'Hammer of the Witches')
Compare to Wiccan/Witch writings.
And tell me which religion of the two really respects women...
The Ancient Britons worshipped a mother goddess, and warrior women also taught men and women how to fight.
Queen Boudicca is a fine example. The Romans came along and raped her daughters, so she went mental on their a55es...and lead tribes against the Romans...
Look out for Mel Gibson, he'll probably Hollywoodize it...
Women's dignity took a backward step with the arrival of monotheism.
The God Yahweh has been misinterpreted as hating women when in fact His hygiene laws were all about keeping diseases from spreading throughout a community through uncontrolled sex, through food contamination and from surface contacts with menstrual blood and semen.
We believe that a woman is the embodiment of 'sakti', the divine creative force with which God enacts the worldly drama. One is required to transcend the attachment to sensual enjoyment in order that he realised his divine potential. Hence, the society has fixed certain code of conduct for regulating the relations between man and woman. A woman basically is incorruptible and it is because of the male connection she is dragged into the pitfalls of sin, contrary to the biblical story of Adam and Eve. Hence, the dos and donts affecting the man and woman relations. In a male dominated society, the woman is at the receiving end.
Because women used to rule the world , and they will do again in the future.
Everything a man does in his life is ultimately for the woman.
So its better to control them than have them control you.
Men need women , do women need men?
The only thing a woman needs a man for is fertilisation.
Because many of them are old and from a time of great female oppression, and therefore the teachings also ';tend towards'; female oppression.
Because they are patriarchal.
Not true. Christianity is the best thing that ever happened to women.

Unless of course you think a woman is really free when she is being forced into temple prostitution.
